We’ve Come a Long Way, But Where are We Today?

Community banking has not been immune to the great recession and what has followed, but we survived. During the pre­recession era (’04–’07), banking was good, possibly great with the industry firing on all cylinders. Systemic headwinds were present (Increasing Competition, NIM Compression, expense ratios drifting higher, all leading to declining profitability and ROAs) but were paced and not overly volatile.

The Great Recession era, we’ll call from ’07–’11, saw a credit environment like none other with subsequent bank specific, systemic, regulatory and congressional responses on almost a daily basis. These were obviously not “normal” times, so we ask the question, “What is the New Normal”?
